Website Projects

I've been doing some work on websites, as the existence of this one proves. I'm also starting work on a site for my church. CSS is my greatest new discovery.

Northwich Parish Church

August 16, 2003

I haven't done any more work on the church site because I want to talk to my vicar about what I've done so far before doing any more. To read how I ended up with the church site job, see here on the projects page.

A few weeks ago, I was perusing the job board at my church. I thought it was unlikely there would be anything I could do, but I am eager to make a contribution for a community which tries to support me. The first job I saw was being a member of the board of governors for the church school... not my thing. The next one was 'weed patrol' in the church yard... something I might do once in a while, but wouldn't want to commit to. Then I saw - the greatest of all jobs that could possibly be there - to produce a website for the church. I grabbed that one quick. I have not had an opportunity to discuss style or content with anyone yet, but I have made a start on design and a bit of a mock-up for demonstration purposes. The results at this point are here.

I have started work on a website for my church. If you would like to take a look at the work in progress, it should be here: Northwich Parish Church. Comments are welcome, but go easy as it is very much under construction right now.

A World Apart

August 16, 2003

Well, since last week a lot of things have changed. I've totally changed the design of the site and taken out the inline frames. It's now a space theme, to go along with the "World Apart" title. It has been a real struggle to get the columns to do what I want, but I am pleased with it now, especially the Home and Personal pages.

Since I began in April 2003, I have done a lot of work on this website, particularly in the last month (July/August). I want it to be a good resource for autism information as well as a place for my friends and acquaintances to get caught up on how my family is doing without me having to explain exactly the same things to each of them.

I haven't done much work on this site or on learning Flash because I've been away. Instead of working on Flash as I intended, I have become distracted by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). I have used them a little in the past, but I didn't fully realise how powerful they are. Using CSS much more extensively has made my site's source code much simpler and the appearance much easier to manipulate. There is still a lot to learn, but I am pleased with my progress so far.

Now I have more time to dedicate to my website. I am teaching myself Flash so I can do my "presentation" in that. I am also hoping to get some more information up about my talks as well as some more writing I've done. Just now, I've added this updates section and a few of my favourite links.
